Why become a Physician?
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services there is a growing need of physicians and specially the primary care physicians in the next few decades. Despite some changes in students intake by many US Medical schools United States will continue to depend on Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG). The current economic turmoil and growing unemployment in most of the sectors and continued demand in healthcare, made the medical field a preferred choice by many High school and college graduates. The acute shortage of physician worldwide makes this profession lucrative nationally and internationally. There is growing demand of physicians in the emerging economic powers of the world like China and India.
Who should be a Physician? Anybody who has passion for Medical field and undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above is a candidate to be a physician. It is really important that the person should have 3.0 and above GPA in Biological sciences.
Is becoming a physician a long commitment of time? Not really. It takes 4-6 years after high school to become physician if you are guided correctly. People who do not have direction and guidance take a longer time. This required time is equivalent to get a degree in business Management and to become an engineer.
How much money is required as tuition?
It varies from school to school. The total cost will be between $100,000 and 250,000 as tuition is dependent whether you study in US outside US as FMG. Foreign medical schools also have varied tuition fee requirement from $10,000/year to $60,000/year. Living and travelling expenses will also be varying.
What is the difference between Foreign MGs and US Medical graduates (USMGs)? Both FMGs and USMGs undergo USMLE exams 1, 2, 3 to be eligible to practice medicine in United States. Additionally 2-3 years residency is also required. US Medical graduates are preferred over FMGs because of their training in US for the residency spots. Approximately 95% of USMGs and 55% of FMGs finally get entrance in residency programs on their first attempt.
What is the difference between FMGs and Caribbean FMGs? Most Caribbean students do their basic science courses or 1st and 2nd year of studies at the island where the parental institution is located and complete their 3rd and 4th year in US clinical environment. During the residency interviewing Caribbean FMGs are preferred over those who did finish their clinical years elsewhere and not in US.
